If you’re drawn to the charm and character of downtown Terre Haute, you’re not alone.

The old buildings and historic landmarks practically scream my name—even after years of driving those streets. This spot has become one of my absolute favorites for beautiful photo backdrops. Every new session surprises me with something new.


What I love the most is the sheer diversity of options. Whether it’s the variety of textures from old brick and painted walls, the florals and greenery that change with the seasons, or the creative ways we can play with light, downtown has a way of showing up beautifully on camera.


But before you lace up your shoes and get your film (okay, memory card) ready, here are a few things to know if you’re planning a downtown Terre Haute photoshoot.

Start with a Game Plan


When you think “downtown photos,” you might picture something super urban—towering buildings and fast-moving people. But in downtown Terre Haute, you get a little bit of everything: charming alleyways, blooming planters, cozy brick textures, and a surprising amount of variety without walking too far.


That said, downtown is a little more spread out than it seems. For most sessions, I stick to just a couple of blocks so we’re not rushing around (or sweating). I always arrive early to scout the area and plan our route so we’re using our time—and golden hour—wisely.


I usually start around the Indiana Theater on Ohio Street. It’s centrally located and packed with options. Behind the theater, there’s an alley with beautiful string lights above a tucked-away restaurant entrance. I like to end back there as twilight sets in and the lights come on—it feels like a little secret spot in the middle of the city. Just to the south is J. Ford's Black Angus restaurant, and their outdoor decor and awning make for a beautiful background.


For this session, we made our way to the Vigo County Public Library, which has a false well out front, a cool lighting installation and bridge on the south side, and seasonal flowers near the main entrance. It's a perfect mix of city and soft, romantic vibes. We ended back in that original alley and stumbled across a Terre Haute mural I had never noticed before. These clients live in Indianapolis now, but they met in Terre Haute while Courtney attended ISU and Spencer was at IU, and they still love this town. Their excitement (and mine) almost outshone those string lights. Almost.

Timing is Everything


Unlike park or field sessions where the tree line cuts off your sunlight early, downtown stays brighter much longer. I always recommend starting a little later than you normally would—no sooner than one hour before sunset.


And in case you didn’t know, Terre Haute is right near the time change line, which means we get some very late sunsets. In the summer, the sun might not dip below the horizon until 9:30 p.m. If your bedtime doesn’t vibe with that, spring or fall might be better.


Personally, I love those late start times. Fewer people, less harsh light, and that dreamy golden-hour glow bouncing off the buildings? Yes please.

What to Wear

With a city session, you’ll get your steps in. We’re not hiking 5 miles, but we are walking a few blocks, so wear comfortable shoes that still photograph well.


Outfits that coordinate with each other—and with downtown’s warm tones—work beautifully. Earth tones, soft neutrals, and textured layers always photograph like a dream here.

Don't Be Surprised If...


…we don’t cover as much ground as you expected. Quality over quantity, always. It’s not about racing through a full downtown tour—it’s about making the most of what’s right around us.


…you feel a little awkward at first. Totally normal. Especially in a public space where you might feel like people are watching. That’s why I always start with a few warm-up shots to shake off the nerves. No pressure to be perfect right away.

Also, I tend to look like the most ridiculous one out there—running around, waving my arms, loudly giving directions—so I happily take most of the attention off of you.


…you laugh at something weird. Whether I’m telling you to whisper your favorite vegetable seductively into your partner’s ear, or fake-gagging when you kiss, a big part of my job is helping you relax and have fun. I read the energy of each couple and use personalized prompts so your photos feel like you, not like a Pinterest checklist.

Client Spotlight


I met Courtney and Spencer through my husband—Courtney went to high school with him and later became one of his college roommates. She met Spencer during that time through a college dating program called Date My School, and the rest is history. They're the kind of couple who prefers to keep things low-key and meaningful, which totally tracks with how they got married: they eloped in Colorado with just their parents present.


For their session, they did a fantastic job choosing outfits that coordinated without being too matchy. The cream and green tones they wore contrasted beautifully with the brick buildings downtown. And honestly? They were so natural in front of the camera that I barely had to give any direction. By the end of it, I was half-joking that they should go pro.


One special thing they do every year is take a photo with their original wedding photo, which they made sure to bring with them for this one. This is honestly a great idea and incredibly cute, also you know I love a prop!


Photographing them felt effortless in the best way, and it was such a joy to capture their quiet, genuine connection in a place that means so much to them.
